A quarter of a century after one of the longest-running international legal assistance proceedings in Swiss history began, the Swiss authorities have brought the matter to a close by releasing over US$670 million to Bruno Wang.<\/a><\/p>

The decision, reported by Corriere del Ticino<\/a> following an examination of confidential Swiss Federal Office of Justice documents obtained by the Tages-Anzeiger, marks the conclusion of more than two decades of asset freezing and legal proceedings concerning assets inherited by Bruno Wang<\/a> from his late father, Andrew Wang.<\/p>

For Bruno Wang<\/a>, the decision closes a chapter that has defined much of his adult life despite the underlying events predating his own involvement. While still a university student in the early 1990s, the commercial activities of his father later became the subject of lengthy international legal proceedings. Following his father’s death, Bruno Wang<\/a> inherited not only the family’s assets, but also decades of legal uncertainty surrounding them.<\/p>

According to Corriere del Ticino, more than US$935 million had been frozen in Swiss bank accounts as part of international mutual legal assistance proceedings.<\/p>

Following years of international cooperation and extensive investigation, the Swiss authorities distinguished between assets that were ordered to be transferred to Taiwan and Switzerland and the substantially larger balance, which the Swiss authorities determined should be lawfully released.\u00a0<\/p>

Approximately US$266 million was transferred to Taiwan and Switzerland. The remaining balance was ordered to be released, resulting in over US$670 million being returned to Bruno Wang<\/a>. The effect of the Swiss decision was to confirm that these returned funds were legally releasable under Swiss law. According to the Swiss Federal Office of Justice’s February 2021 public statement, no sufficient basis was established to connect the remaining funds to any wrongdoing, which is why they were ordered to be released.<\/p>

One of the factors relied upon by the Swiss authorities was a 2019 ruling of Taiwan’s Supreme Court. According to the Swiss decision cited by Corriere del Ticino, Andrew Wang’s family, the beneficiaries of the frozen assets were recognised as “third parties not involved in the commission of any potential offence.”<\/p>

The Swiss authorities also concluded that, after more than twenty years of mutual legal assistance proceedings, the matter had reached the point where it should be brought to a close.<\/p>

In addition, Corriere del Ticino reports that the Swiss decision recognised that Thales, formerly Thomson-CSF, had already reimbursed Taiwan in connection with payments relating to the frigate contracts. On that basis, the return of the remaining assets to the Wang family was not considered to prejudice Taiwan’s position.<\/p>

Taken together, these findings resulted in what Corriere del Ticino describes as one of the largest releases of frozen assets in Swiss judicial history, \u00a0and among the largest in Switzerland’s history.<\/p>

Throughout the proceedings, Bruno Wang<\/a> has consistently maintained that he was not involved in the commercial transactions that later became the subject of legal scrutiny. As reported by Corriere del Ticino, his lawyers have repeatedly noted that he was a student at the time of the underlying events and have emphasised that he has never been convicted of any offence. Through his legal representatives, Bruno Wang<\/a> told the Tages-Anzeiger that the events underlying the matter “date back many years and have long since been dealt with by the courts” and “now belong to the historical archives.”<\/p>

The prolonged proceedings nevertheless carried significant personal consequences. During the decades in which the assets remained frozen, Bruno Wang<\/a> lived under the shadow of a case rooted in events from an earlier generation. He maintained a largely private life, spent many years outside Taiwan, and saw his family’s reputation repeatedly shaped by proceedings that originated long before his own involvement.<\/p>

Today, however, Bruno Wang<\/a>‘s public profile is increasingly defined by different pursuits. As Corriere del Ticino observes, he is known internationally as a patron of the arts, a film producer and a supporter of Buddhist philosophy<\/a> and contemplative practice. His philanthropic and cultural activities include support for leading artistic, theatrical, educational and cultural initiatives.<\/p>

The Swiss decision therefore represents far more than the release of substantial assets. It marks the conclusion of a legal process that lasted more than twenty-five years and confirms that, according to the Swiss authorities, no sufficient basis was established to continue questioning the legal status of the overwhelming majority of the assets inherited by Bruno Wang<\/a>.<\/p>

For Bruno Wang<\/a>, the significance is both personal and practical. Assets that had remained inaccessible for decades have now been lawfully released by the Swiss authorities following the completion of the Swiss proceedings. With that chapter concluded, he is now able to devote greater focus and resources to the philanthropic, cultural and educational work that increasingly defines his public life.<\/p>

As Corriere del Ticino observes, a story once compared to “the plot of a spy film” has now reached a significant legal milestone.
